Two intrepid users have found a simple way to mod their old iPhone docks to work with iPhone 3G: a rotary tool.
All it takes, apparently, is grinding away about a millimeter of the plastic where the back of the iPhone 3G rests against the dock. A rotary tool with a tapered grinding bit appears to work the best, as it avoids touching the dock connector.

Unclutterer is one of my favorite blogs. They offer practical advice and tips on keeping your work, home and life tidy and clutter-free.
This week, they’ve posted an article on using the iPhone for increased productivity and clutter reduction. There are several great tips, including my favorite — photograph the bar codes of your membership cards (gym, Staples, etc.) and store them in an appropriately named album. Most scanners should have no trouble reading the bar codes (test this before ditching your cards, of course).

IntoMobile has a few good tips on how to extend your iPhone’s battery life, and most of them involve the most obvious thing you can do to keep your iPhone running: cut down on any and all extra functions. They actually recommend to turn off 3G, but you don’t have to go that far — just by holding down the Home button, you can close any background applications sucking up juice. And by resetting your phone, you can do the same thing — clear out anything running that you’re not using.

Evernote for iPhone (iTunes link) looks to fill one of the big remaining holes on the iPhone: virtual notes syncing. Basically, the iPhone app is a stripped down version of the Evernote client which allows you to create and access notes which are stored in the Evernote cloud. Once created these notes can be accessed on the web or through any Evernote client application (they’re available for Mac OS X, Windows and Windows Mobile).

Twitter is a micro blogging platform which allows you to publish short messages of less than 140 characters through different mediums like IM, cellphones and the web. It has a social element as well, as it allows users to befriend and monitor each other’s messages or updates. So what you have here is a publishing tool that can be either public and private. It is also similar to an IRC channel although messages are displayed less rapidly. Some have called it a slower version of internet messengers.
Twitter allows users can be accessed using the iPhone todays. There are some ways to get your Twitter updates on your iPhone. Those are basically Email, Web-based Twitter Clients, SMS, Instant Messenger and Twitter Mobile friendly websites for now.

If you’re a casual jailbreaker, or looking to simply unlock your iPhone, you probably want to wait for another week for the bugs to be ironed out of the system and the software to become more stable. The iPhone dev team have done a fabulous job as a first approach — especially under the huge pressure and time constraints they’ve been subjected to — but it’s still not “ready for Grandma”.

The iPhone 3G activation saga is quite confusing. Most people think that Apple and AT&T will require iPhone activations on the spot, thereby cutting into a big part of the unlocked iPhone phenomenon. However, this AP report suggests that there will be a way for people to get unactivated iPhones, the only catch being AT&T will slap a penalty on you if you don’t activate your iPhone within 30 days. The amount of the penalty, or how AT&T will even know who you are since your iPhone wasn’t activated, is unclear.
